3960 Laurel Street in the Irish Channel Neighborhood of New Orleans, is a great example of a historically sensitive addition approach. The shotgun house is a narrow rectangular domestic residence, usually no more than 10-24 feet wide, with rooms arranged one behind the other and doors ar each end of the house. The shotgun house is atypical house type of the New Orleans area and can be modified in a variety of ways. One of the most classic renovations to the shotgun house is the addition of a second floor story situated at the rear portion of the house called a "camelback". Under the direction of Rick Fifield Architect it was possible to take this single shotgun and add a camelback addition while maintaining the traditional elements of the shotgun house.
